5th International Conference on Advanced Vibrational Spectroscopy
Bruno Pettinger
Department of Physical Chemistry, Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Berlin, Germany
Dr. Bruno Pettinger was born in Munich, Germany, in 1943. He obtained his diploma degree (MS) in physics from the Technical University of Munich, Germany, in 1970. The same year he moved to Berlin, Germany, to become a Ph.D. student with Prof. Heinz Gerischer in the Dept. of Physical Chemistry of the Fritz Haber Institute (FHI) of the Max Planck Society. Bruno Pettinger completed his Ph.D. thesis at the FHI in 1972. In 1977, after working for another five years as a research scientist, Bruno Pettinger became head of the spectroscopy group in the Dept. of Physical Chemistry of the FHI. His present research is focused on the application of tip–enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) to study molecular and ionic adsorption at well-defined metal surfaces with the aim of achieving single-molecule TER sensitivity and of improving the spatial resolution of this optical technique into the nanometer scale. First steps in this direction were single-molecule TERS on Au(111) surfaces under ambient conditions and, with a newly developed setup for UHV-TERS, on Au(111) surfaces under UHV conditions, thereby obtaining fingerprint spectra from the adsorbate. Bruno Pettinger continues to have an active research group in the Dept. of Physical Chemistry of the FHI, Berlin.
