5th International Conference on Advanced Vibrational Spectroscopy

Dr. Don Pivonka

Dr. Don Pivonka

Dr. Don Pivonka received a B.Sc in chemistry from Benedictine college (1983) and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Kansas State University (1987).  Graduate work centered on understanding of non-metal atomic emission spectroscopy in inert gas plasmas using Fourier transform detection methods.

Don was the inaugural recipient of the Tomas Hirschfeld award presented at the 1987 Pittsburgh Conference.  In his professional career, he spent 5 years at Hercules, Inc (1987-1992) where he used vibrational spectroscopy to further the understanding of polymer processes and performance.  In 1992, Don joined the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI).  With the transition of this role from ICI to Zeneca (1993) and finally to AstraZeneca (2000) through a demerger and subsequent merger, Don’s research focus has accordingly shifted from specialty chemicals to pharmaceutical research.  Don is presently a principal chemist in the central nervous system research effort.  Don holds patents for novel technologies in drug discovery, numerous publications /book chapters, has presented ~ 40 invited lectures, and has recently co-edited the book titled “Applications of Vibrational Spectroscopy in Pharmaceutical Research and Development”.
