Area of Expertise
Dr Phil Heraud is a Research Fellow at the Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories at Monash University, Clayton, Victoria, Australia. Phil’s expertise involves using FTIR, Raman and Scanning Transmission X-ray Microspectroscopy (STXM) to analyze the biochemistry of cells and tissues. The research utilizes synchrotron sources in the USA, Germany, United Kingdom, and Singapore, as well as laboratory-based instruments at the Centre for Biospectroscopy at Monash University, of which Phil is a founding member. His current research interests involve studying neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Huntington’s disease and the characterization of stem cell differentiation along neuronal and glial pathways. An alternative branch of Phil’s research interests involves using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy to study microalgae and higher plants. He is particularly interested in understanding the effects of climate change, particularly increasing UV-B and CO2 levels, on the biochemistry of phytoplankton and terrestrial plants. Multivariate data analysis and artificial neural networks play a vital role in the research for the interpretation and classification of spectroscopic data and for imaging.
