Green chemistry workshops

Green Chemistry Logo

The Centre for Green Chemistry offers a Professional Development Workshop for Science Teachers, which is run in collaboration with the Department of Education and Training (Vic).

The Workshop material includes: developments in green chemistry technology; the principles of "sustainable" science and how they apply in the classroom; "keepin' it real" with relevant demonstrations and experiments; and utilising teaching resources in green chemistry.

Workshops run for two hours. Contact your local science coordinator for information, or talk to us to arrange a session in your area.

Green chemistry textbooks

"How can we educate succeeding generations of chemists so that they will have the skills and knowledge to practice chemistry in ways that are benign to human health and the environment?"

This question lies at the heart of the Green Chemistry Educational Materials Development Project begun in 1998 by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). These organisations are working to promote development of a variety of Green Chemistry resource materials for educators to use in classrooms and laboratories.

A number of books for Green Chemistry education are now available through the ACS.

Introduction to Green Chemistry

Book cover: Introduction to green chemistry

Green chemistry is a set of principles and practices that aim to reduce generation and use of hazardous materials in chemical products and processes. By incorporating Green Chemistry principles into the chemistry curriculum, educators can provide students with a positive message about what chemists are doing for the environment and introduce them to this emerging area of chemical research.

In our opinion, this book is the best choice for chemistry teachers in secondary schools wanting to incorporate green chemistry into their lessons.

The book has six chapters, each containing background information, a green chemistry experiment, questions and answers, and guidelines for discussion.

Highly recommended.

Real-world cases in Green Chemistry

Book cover: Real world cases in Green Chemistry

This book was designed for undergraduate courses but may be of interest to the secondary school teacher. It contains descriptions of ten projects that have won or been nominated for the highly coveted Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge awards. A useful reference for practical applications of green chemistry in industry. Shows how redesign of chemical processes and products is preventing pollution and solving environmental problems.
